Fantastic holidays in Chicago!
Welcome to Chicago, the city which is consistently voted the best big city in the United States! Perched aside the beautiful Lake Michigan, the Windy City isn’t all that windy. In fact, its weather is typically continental, with warm summers and snowy winters. This just makes this cultural metropolis beautiful whichever season you choose to visit!
In the UK, we know Chicago from movies about its most famous inhabitants, the Italian American mobsters that have inhabited this big town since 1910. If you’ve seen the movie Scarface then you’ll know about Chicago’s most famous resident, Al Capone. Take one of the many gangster and ghost tours around the city to get an idea of the mischief and murder that once was the signature of the Chicago Outfit.
Nowadays, Chicago is perfectly safe, and is a cosmopolitan city of culture. Take a stroll to the beautiful Millennium Park to visit the famous Cloud Gate, also known as The Bean. This mirrorlike sculpture was created by British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor and cleverly reflects the people and skyline of downtown Chicago. At night, The Bean is lit up with the reflection of the lights of Michigan Avenue - a sight not to be missed!
The Chicago Riverwalk, also known as The Loop, takes in lots of the city’s main attractions, passing by the central business district with its arresting architecture and impressive skyscrapers. If you’d rather travel on two wheels, the city is full of bike hire companies. Take your bike through the city and traverse the Lakefront trail at the shore of Lake Michigan.
Other things you might like to try in this impressive city are:
- Deep dish pizza - well, it would be rude not to try this city’s signature dish! Head to Giordanos or Penquod’s for the city’s most famous variations.
- In direct opposition to the city’s more dangerous past, downtown Chicago is littered with Michelin-starred restaurants, upscale hotels, and boutique shopping malls. This is a fantastic place for a little window (or real-life) shopping in style!
- For 360-degree views across the whole city and towards Lake Michigan, head to the Chicago Observation Deck on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Centre. You won’t be disappointed!
- Being one of the top sports cities in the US, you can choose to watch almost any of the major sports here. However, the most popular of the teams in the town are the Chicago Bulls Basketball team. Head to the United Center to watch them play or take in an ice hockey match instead as this is also home to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Lake Michigan
Chicago sits on the shore of the majestic Lake Michigan, one of the 5 Great Lakes of North America. Lake Michigan borders not one but six US states. Arguably, the best beaches along this vast lake are in Chicago. Head to the golden sands of Kenosha for an incredible day by the water.
Of course, if you’re not one to sunbathe all day, there’s plenty to do at Lake Michigan. Ride e-bikes along the Lakefront trail, play beach volleyball, or hire paddleboards, kayaks, or jet skis and make the most of the opportunity to do water sports in safe waters.
Lake Michigan is freshwater and has no association with the seas, meaning there are no sharks, whales, or jellies to worry about!
