TAKE A WALK IN MUSICAL MEMPHIS FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE U.S HOLIDAY!
What better city to visit for music lovers than the home of the blues and the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll? Memphis is a city whose heartbeat is audible as you walk the street. There’s a music venue on almost every corner in the energetic Downtown area and live music and barbecue restaurants are the reason you’ll want to stay longer and longer!
Iconic Beale Street is the vein of high class live music venues that runs through Downtown. This world-famous street is mentioned in many a song and has showcased some of the world’s best musicians, including BB King, Elvis Presley, Booker T, and Otis Redding. It began its heyday in the 20s with dancehalls and theatres, and now is arguably the world’s best spot for live music clubs and top-class restaurants. Some, like the famed Rum Boogie Club, do both!
This musical mecca is also home to some of the best music museums in the States, including the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the Blues Hall of Fame, and the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum. You could spend days in each, so make sure to factor these fantastic exhibitions into your holiday schedule!
Memphis is also famous for its National Civil Rights Museum, also located in Downtown Memphis. Poignantly located in the Lorraine Motel, where civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr was fatally shot on 4th April 1968, the motel is now a national museum showcasing over 400 years of history. 260 artifacts help explain movements from slavery and Civil War to Reconstruction and the pivotal acts of the Civil Rights Movement in the 20th century, including the very bus that Rosa Parks sat on during the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955.
As well as an overwhelming amount of American history and music, you can also experience:
- The award-winning Memphis Zoo. This large zoo is home to over 3,500 animals from each corner of the globe, including one of only three pairs of protected giant pandas named YaYa and LeLe. You can also feed giraffes, zebras, and elephants, and view America’s own Grizzly bears. A great family day out during your stay in Memphis.
- The Children’s Museum of Memphis is for curious minds to explore and play. Designed specifically for young ones who are more tactile than adults, they can ride on the Grand Carousel, built in 1909, the Engine House for a change to be a fireperson, as well as H2OH! Splash Park, a great way to cool down after a day of adventures.
- Memphis doesn’t have to be expensive - street performers will entertain kids and adults with shows and music. Street food is popular here, too, and has a Southern twist, such as deep-fried catfish.
- It’s not just Memphis’ music that is good for the soul, they also serve up soul food here. As well as Southern classics, this city is known for its barbecue food, with over 100 barbecue restaurants to choose from. Mexican food is also very popular here, so plenty of authentic and delicious options to choose from.
A trip to Memphis is a treat for the senses, from beautiful bars full of guitars to the music filling the air, and great food to smell and taste!
