SUPERB SOUTH CAROLINA HOLIDAYS!
This diverse state offers outdoor adventures, historic buildings, and exceptional coastal retreats. With miles of subtropical sandy beaches stretching up its 180-mile shore, world-renowned golf courses on its sandy cliffs, incredible UNESCO state parks dotted throughout, and outstanding towns and cities to explore, you’ll have plenty to do in the Palmetto State.
Head to South Carolina’s coast for some of the best beaches on East coast. Travel to the Grand Strand, a 60-mile arc of sand which is home to the colourful city of Myrtle Beach. This city is popular with holidaymakers and students due to its pristine sands, great hotels, and attractions such as the Myrtle Beach Skywheel and the prominent Apache Pier.
Visit historic cities such as Charleston with its pastel-coloured houses and cobblestone streets. Fort Sumner is just across the water from Charleston harbour and is the site that the first shots were fired during the American Civil War.
Columbia, the capital city of South Carolina, is a beautiful, green city which is home to South Carolina State House, as well as Riverbanks Zoo animal park and its stunning botanical gardens.
This state is also home to over 2,000 plantations. These sites offer an insight into a dark piece of American history, with many of the plantation houses now museums which pay tribute to the many enslaved workers that lived there. Plantation tours are popular, and many plantations, such as Magnolia Plantation near Charleston, have been turned into outstanding gardens.
Other sites you’ll want to visit in South Carolina include:
- Congaree National Park is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, with a plethora of rare flora and fauna within its 26,000 acres. As well as cool plants, this huge park is one of the best places to spot bobcats, deer, and the humble armadillo!
- The UFO Welcome Centre in Bowman is an eccentric welcome centre created by alien enthusiast Jody Pendarvis. Cobbled together from scrap and arranged to resemble two large alien crafts, this makeshift greeting space is worth seeing to believe…much like the visitors aspiring intergalactic ambassador Pendarvis eagerly awaits.
- Caesars Head State Park can be found in the north-western corner of South Carolina, bordering its northern counterpart. The ‘head’ itself is a giant rock formation with sits high above the park, overseeing the wildlife below.
- If you’re a fan of ginger ale, then head to Blenheim Mineral Springs where, after the discovery of a mineral spring by a Patriot soldier during the American revolution, ginger ale was first made by adding Jamaican ginger and sugar to make the ‘healing’ water more palpable. It’s now rated as the second-most popular drink in the US.
- To see this beautiful state from the water, why not book yourself onto a Barriers Island Ecotour at Isle of Palms, near Charleston? Take a boat or pontoon cruise up the intercoastal waterway to see dolphins, turtles, herons, bald eagles, and the salt marshes that stretch into the Atlantic Ocean.
