Unforgettable holidays in borneo!
Straddled by the sparkling sea, shared by two countries, and dominated by some of the most ancient rainforest in the world, Borneo is the emerald jewel in the crown of Malaysia! This is a hot, humid, tropical island, offering a long, sunny climate for visitors. This colourful paradise offers something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in wildlife, culture, or adventure, this is the island experience for you!
The rainforest is home to some of the world’s most unique creatures, such as the Bornean orangutang and the Sumatran rhino. Take a guided tour to some of the best spots to see orangutang in the wild or take a boat trip out to sea to swim with the giant sea turtles. Keep an eye out for the world’s largest flower, the metre-long diameter Rafflesia arnoldii which only grows here in Borneo!
The mixture of cultures on the island makes for a great culinary experience, too. There are hawkers’ markets everywhere on the island, serving up a mixture of Malay, Indian, Thai, and Indonesian dishes. Just order from your favourite stall, take a seat, and feast on freshly cooked, regional food! These stalls are better than any five-star restaurant for authentic Bornean food.
There’s a whole host of things to experience on beautiful Borneo, including:
- Take a light aircraft trip over the rainforest and drop in on friendly villages deep in the jungle, such as Long Lellang, where villagers are keen to show others their traditional way of life.
- Visit Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Sarawak to see the old men of the jungle, the orangutang, and other endangered species being affected by the deforestation of Borneo, to see the efforts being made to keep them safe.
- Head to the spectacular Mulu National Park to explore the intricate cave system which rose from the sea floor over 5 million years ago. Hike the Head-hunter trail through the World Heritage Site before taking a longboat back to civilisation - there are no roads in Mulu!
- Head to the city of Kuching, which means ‘cat’ in Malay, to see thousands of statues of cats all across the largest city in the area. It’s also home to the largest Chinese population of Borneo, so keep an eye out for Chinese buildings and the famous market.
- If you’re feeling adventurous, why not climb Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the majestic Mount Kinabalu. Not a challenge for beginners, it’s 4,905 metres above sea level. It does, however, have a very accessible route, tons of incredible plants littering the path, and the best views in Borneo!

Discover Asia’s Smallest Elephants!
Book a river tour of the mighty Kinabatangan River, the vein that feeds the island of Borneo, to see some of its most famous residents, the pygmy elephants. The smallest elephants in Asia love to roam the riverbanks with their herd. You’ll probably hear these vocal creatures before you see them as they like to ‘sing’ and call to each other. Although they are a miniature version of their species, they still stand at up to 10 metres tall, with 1,500 individuals still living on the island.
This amazing animal should be at the top of your Borneo wish list to see, but it’s better to do so with a local guide and all while keeping this endangered animal safe. They will know how and where to spot elephants without distressing the herd, as these animals are a highly valued sustainable rainforest resource and are fiercely protected by the local population.
