Thrilling holidays in BANGKOK!
Once the small outpost known as Krung Thep, Bangkok is now the most populated city in Thailand. Bangkok will surprise you with its heady mixture of old and new. In this fascinating city, you’ll find ancient temples sitting beside brand-new skyscrapers, with floodlights up lighting ancient monuments in bright, neon colours at night. This is a city that doesn’t stop; the spice markets are full of colour, smells, and people haggling during the day, while the city’s popular nightclubs keep going all night long!
Bangkok is also the anchor of finance for Thailand, as well as the international hub for transport and the arts. The government buildings are situated within the ancient temples, doubling down on the city’s importance as a major historical and cultural hub. It’s the world’s most visited city, with fantastic street life, upmarket fashion, and entertainment hotspots throughout! A walk around the city centre will immerse you in delicious Thai food, great shopping malls, beautiful parks, and outstanding sky bars!
Here are a few things that you might not expect to see in Bangkok:
- Take Bangkok’s super-fast, super cool Sky Train. Hop on (or should we say up) to the air-conditioned carriages which zoom around high above the streets and motorways, giving you a quick, convenient way to get around with great aerial views of the city!
- Visit Chatuchak Market, a shopping experience like you’ve never had before! Over 8,000 stalls cover a mere 27 acres of space, selling everything from food produce, clothes, household goods, trinkets, and more. It’s one of the largest, and certainly busiest, markets in the world and the place to go to get great deals on your mementos!
- Get a traditional Thai massage from the experts. This will be unlike anything you’ve had in Britain - head to Plant Day Spa in Ruamrudee Tower for an authentic Thai massage experience and for a moment of calm in this thronging city.
- As the evening draws in, head to the 61st floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel for a drink on top of the world! The Vertigo and Moon bar and restaurant offers unparalleled views of Bangkok so high above the city that you’ll feel like you’re in the clouds! A great way to view the lights and sights of the city at sunset with a glass of something cool in your hand.
Bangkok is a surprisingly multi-layered city - a trip here feels like you’re walking through layers of Thailand’s history. With spiritual temples sitting beside rooftop bars, and ancient gardens nestled between shopping districts, Bangkok is a great way to see a cultural slice of Thailand. Wat Pho and the Reclining Budda
Wat Pho is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Thailand, and is situated in south Bangkok, close to the Grand Palace. It’s the largest and oldest temple in Bangkok and is decorated with over 99 pagodas. Wat Pho means ‘Temple of the Reclining Buddha’, and you can visit the Buddha himself. He is a 15-metre-high, 46-metre-long golden Buddha, leaning as if about to enter into Nirvana. He’s beautifully decorated with shell and mother of pearl, with symbols dotted all around symbolising his final reincarnation. This is the largest Buddha in Thailand and a sight you’ll never forget!
