holidays in northern territory!
There are countless unique and unforgettable experiences to be had in Australia’s outback. Internationally renowned sites sit in this northern edge of Australia, such as the sacred Uluru and Kakadu National Park. Take a self-drive holiday through red rocked canyons and past waterholes and two-metre-high termite mounds! The Red Centre is almost otherworldly, and if you hang around past the fantastic sunsets until nightfall, it’s just you and a billion stars in this clear dark sky area.
This area is in touch with its aboriginal history with opportunities for storytelling tours of the Dreaming, or aboriginal philosophy, available to those who care to know the stories of the Spirit Ancestors. Tours of sacred places are teamed with bush foraging, forest trekking, and traditional feasts!
This swathe of red, arid landscape is also the place where you’ll find NT’s capital city, Darwin. This easy-going city is packed with galleries and museums showcasing the rich aboriginal heritage of the state. Being close to Asia, the city is also known for exciting food and great nightlife. This cosmopolitan city is more than a watering hole, it’s an exciting, vibrant coastal metropolis on the Northern coast.
Some unmissable activities to add to your travel itinerary are:
- The town of Katharine is home to Nitmiluk National Park where you can take a cruise down the gorge and spot the Northern Territory’s toothiest residents, crocodiles. The world’s largest croc population lives in NT, so book a guided tour to see them sunning themselves on the rocks in this spectacular spot!
- Barunga Festival is a celebration of Aboriginal remote life, including music, art, sport, and food, and is held in the small community of Barunga every August.
- If you’re a fan of fishing, then take a boat out to catch one of the feistiest fish in the Northern waters, the silver barramundi. If you can reel it in, then you’ve done a rare thing!
- At Lichfield National Park, spend the afternoon swimming in the natural pools under the refreshing waterfalls created by the double cascades of Wangi and Florence falls.
- Head to Karlu Karlu, or the Devil’s Marbles at sunset. At this time of the night, the red sky refracts off the granite boulders and the whole valley looks as though it’s been set alight - a scene that can be seen nowhere else!

ULURU OR AYERS ROCK!
Uluru is more than just a large sandstone formation in the centre of the Northern Territory. It’s a monolith in the beating heart of the aboriginal desert and has been drawing people to its sacred spot for millennia. It’s a deeply sacred place to the Anangu people and out of respect, the climb up the side of the rock was permanently closed in 2019. You can take tours that take you to the best spot to view the 348-metre-high ochre landmark, where you can then take a walking tour around the base of this spiritually important place with an Anangu guide.
