EXCITING HOLIDAYS IN NEW ORLEANS!

Filled with music and Mardi Gras, Creole food and voodoo, New Orleans has a distinct culture and history that’s as fascinating as it is fantastical! This charming city, once battered by Storm Katrina but with untouched historic 18th-century buildings at its core, is a feast for the eyes.

The most famous area of New Orleans is the French quarter, with colourful buildings, decorated townhouses, and ornate balconies, fantastic cafes, and art galleries. Bourbon Street is the liveliest of these streets, with jazz clubs, piano bars, and rock nights creating a unique sound up and down the heart of the city. This is the place to party, a haven for music lovers, and is very popular during Mardi Gras!

Cajun and Creole food are aplenty across New Orleans. Cafes and restaurants serve up the authentic flavours of New Orleans, including rice and beans, gumbo, jambalaya, and delicious crawfish pulled fresh from the nearby water. It’s a fusion of French, West African, and Native American food, and you’ll find it everywhere from upscale restaurants to street vendors.

New Orleans sits on the historic Mississippi river, right where the river meets the Gulf of Mexico. It’s here that you can experience this infamous river as it once was with a river trip on the only steamboat left in operation in New Orleans, the Natchez. This jazz cruise includes a full jazz band and Creole lunch as you spend 2.5 hours cruising up this magnificent river!

There’s so much to see and do in colourful New Orleans. Why not discover more:

  • Voodo. It first arrived in New Orleans due to the slave trade, but soon, Voodoo kings and queens were influential political figures of the 20th century. The most famous voodoo queen of New Orleans is Marie Laveaux, and you can take one of many Voodoo tours to her grave in St Louis Cemetery No 1.
  • Take a ride on a New Orleans streetcar, which you can pick up Downtown and travel the 5.5-mile route around the city. The dark green St Charles streetcar is a romantic way to view the city and has been rumbling down this street for over 150 years!
  • As well as streets packed with incredible architecture and bars, the city has great green spaces, too, such as the 1,300-acre City Park. It’s roughly double the size of New York’s Central Park and has the world’s largest collection of mature oak trees, some of which are over 600 years old!
  • As well as being obsessed with voodoo, New Orleans has its fair share of ghost tours, too. Freak yourself out with tales of vampires, dead sailors, and gory unsolved deaths!
  • The Aquarium, based at the lower end of the French quarter, is well-known for its 30-foot-long underwater tunnel, where you can see sharks, piranhas, anacondas, and alligators, all from behind the safety of the glass.

From walking tours to streetcars, great architecture, tall tales of voodoo and ghosts, fantastic freshly cooked Creole food, and a thriving nightlife, New Orleans is a great place to visit.

MARDI GRAS!

Mardi Gras is the religious celebration of Shrove Tuesday which is a popular festival in the southern states of America. New Orleans hosts the most famous and extravagant Mardi Gras in all of Louisiana, if not the world. It’s two weeks of parties, parades, floats, and costumes! Everyone dresses up, and if you drive around the suburbs of the city, natives of NOLA also go to town with decorating their wooden houses, their porches full of banners, lights, and colour. In Bourbon Street, the processions party their way down the street, with bars joining in with their own masquerade parties and balls. Beads and sweets are often thrown into the crowd by floats, and the party carries on well into the night, and for a solid five days or so following Shrove Tuesday.

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is something to add to the bucket list - you’ll never have seen a party like this one. You will soon understand why New Orleans is the ultimate party city, they really know how to throw a great celebration!

New Orleans is consistently voted the 2nd best place to visit in America after New York. You will love the cultural diversity, the intriguing local dialect, the fusion of food, and a general party atmosphere and friendly vibes.
